Cut off in my prime…

October 14, 2006 | Comments

Hi there

Got back from a week in the Lakes today to find BT had still not restored my broadband but had also cut off my phone line. So once again I am at the sports club writing this with a coffee. I’ve had a great week, walking, eating, drinking and chilling out. Thanks for all the lovely comments about Decent Exposure but I still haven’t seen one personally in the shops. However I do have a photo of the books at Ottakars Stafford with ‘Signed by The Author’ stickers on them. That is SO cool. :)  Thanks to Janice and her staff for the display and for not putting me next to the pop-up kama sutra…

I’m experiencing some of the highs and a few of the lows of being A Published Author at the moment. 99% of the time , you get nothing but goodwill but there are a few niggles (I nearly wrote knickers there). You often find that the badwill comes from sources with a hidden agenda. The great thing about being an author - or a writer - of any mkind - is that any experience - and the not-so-nice ones in particular - can all be stored and used in your writing. It is wonderful therapy! Being part of the RNA and romance writing community is also a great support. I’ve had some excellent and very useful advice throughout the process - one of the best being from a very ‘tender’ author who told me not to worry about anything before i was published as there was plenty to worry about afterwards! She was right but I still wouldn’t swap the job for the world (unless it contained Guy of Gisbourne in black leather).

I’m hoping to post some of the reviews from Amazon and C19 here and a pic of the book in situ as soon as I can.

Hi to all the people who helped me celebrate the launch, either physically or in cyber-space. And do visit Jess’s blog and Nell’s blogs - links opposite - to find out what they are up to right now.

A funny old day…Not!

October 4, 2006 | 8 Comments

Hi there

What a day! I don’t know whether to laugh or cry but I can’t share it with you or name names. However someone today managed to make me feel about two inches tall - and it was everything to do with old-fashioned bureaucracy and Victorian attitudes.

The day  has ended on a real high… I have a copy  of the Radio Times with the utterly luscious Richard Armitage on the cover dressed in black leather. he is a lovely guy, if youdidn’t know it already, take it from me - a real gentleman though not, I hear, as Guy of Gisborne in Robin Hood! And I was down to only one book remianing at one point on Amazon which was a blast. They now have more and I also hear my fellow LBD author and friend Julie Cohen’s book, Sprit Willing has been going down a storm.

Finally thanks to all the lovely people on my fave website for writing such fab reviews of Decent Exposure. I’d just like to quote a lovely comment from ‘Daffodil’ and also to apologise for those readers whose books have not been delivered yet.

***SPOILERS***Well what can I say but - Author I devoured it!! ;DI read it over the weekend, and just couldn’t put it down on the Sat night in bed, so finished it at 3.30am! The book had an outing at the evening dinner and went round each table to be admired. It was a delicious story and had everything that I love, TDH gorgeous hero, feisty beautiful heroine, angst, cleverly devised repressed feelings…. :'( I’ll be re-reading it soon too.

Wonderful stuff. Do hope you’ll be writing more. [image]

Publication Day

October 2, 2006 | 7 Comments

Today is P-day. The official day that Decent Exposure hits the shelves of bookshops all over the UK. Actually, it hasn’t hit the shelves of one at least but…

I had a phone call this morning from Annette G who had just bought a copy from Waterstones in Princes Street, Edinburgh. Which was really cool - thanks Annette, you’re the first person I know to have seen it in the shops and I can’t wait to spot it. And thanks Duckface for the texts.

I thought I might be driving round looking for it today but work has got in the way (I’ve been out all day doing a magazine feature) and also my mind has been slightly distracted as my daughter went off to uni yesterday. If she’s looking, CJ, hello!

I still have no broadband but Virgin have said Bt should have it restored by Thursday night. I won’t hold my breath and I’ll carry on blogging about it until they do. So it’s quite difficult for me to post pictures etc on here with only dial-up.

On a lovely note, I’ve had two fascinating and fun reviews from some of the first people to read the book so if they don’t mind I’ll post them here. This is such a thrill for me to have people reading and enjoying the book. thanks for these - they are edited for spoilers btw.

I loved it!The descriptions transported me to the Lakes and their…unpredictable weather. I fell in love with the characters got choked up at both of their insecurities and anguish, and heaved a big happy sigh at the end. But most of all, I could hear all these characters speak - the dialogue is pitch perfect and never strikes a note that makes one think ‘but no-one actually says that’.

It took me miles away from my suburban sofa for three hours - and, as Daisy Goodwin says, that’s what books like this are all about! :) .

I could, of course, just wax lyrical about how sexy Will is… but I think that may go without saying. Or what a sympathetic character Emma is, bruised but unbowed, sassy when she needs to be but warm as molten fudge on the inside. I think the way they each in their different ways overcome their fear of committing again is beautifully realised through the course of the book.
The title brings out so many of the themes that are running through the book. Emma is getting ‘exposure’ for the mountain rescue team through the calendar. There are the fells with their threatening changes of weather lurking in the background all the time, with their danger of physical ‘exposure’. And of course, the fear of the two central characters of exposure of their damaged hearts to these new feelings they are experiencing…
What else am I jealous of? So much! The completely natural flow of the dialogue, whether it’s Emma and Will’s gloriously sparky sparring, or the mountain rescue team being boys together, or just the chat in the tourist board office. Then there is the glorious build up – and release! - of the sexual tension, but, hmm hmm, let’s not go there.

I hope you all enjoy reading it as much i as loved writing it.
