My first signing

September 8, 2007

I did my first signing today. My biggest fear was that no one would come along. I had no idea if zero people or 40 would arrive at James Redshaw, the awesome independent bookshop in Lichfield, my home town.

The reality, of course, was somewhere in between. What amazed me was the age range of people buying both Wish You Were Here and Decent Exposure. I had all ages from teenagers up to ladies who are, shall we say, slightly more mature. In fact, I got a lovely email from the son of a lady of 87 the other day. Not a bad spread of buyers, I’d say.

My running coach and his wife also came along - thanks Chris and Lesley. They are wonderful - they know I have had to give up running or face surgery but they still came to support me. :)

If you want to write a book and think ‘it couldn’t be me’, well, I thought that. But how wrong I was. It CAN be you. It could be you. But you have to be in it to win it, so get writing and finish that novel now!

I just had acall from the bookshop to say they have sold out of signed copies and would I go in today and sign some more. This is good for two reasons. 1. I have also left my special pen in the shop and 2 - I’ve received my advance cheque and desperately need to shore up my bank account!
