The Next Big Thing
October 25, 2012
I’ve been tagged by two authors – Allie Spencer and Rebecca Emin to take part in the The Next Big Thing – a clever way of bringing new reads and authors to people’s attention. The idea is to answer ten questions about writing and the writing life, then tag five more authors the next week.
So here goes:
What is the working title of your book?
My next book is called It Happened One Night but since it’s not out until June 2013, and Miranda’s Mount is out now – I’m going to talk about that one.
Where did the idea come from for the book?
I thought the idea flew into my head from nowhere on a long car journey in January 2011 but actually, the seeds were sown before then. I’ve always loved romantic adventure stories such as Lorna Doone, The Scarlet Pimpernel and Robin Hood and must have secretly longed to write one of my own. Miranda’s Mount is a modern day tale of honour, duty, romance, adventure and passion. It’s also set on possibly the most romantic location in Britain – an island castle that looks very much like St Michael’s Mount. As soon as I had the seed of the idea, I *had* to write it!
What genre does your book fall under?
The publisher describes it as a sexy funny contemporary romance which is perfect.
What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book
This one – which was used for the blurb.
When Miranda finds herself fighting for her home, her job and her heart, sleeping with the enemy may not be the best tactic..
Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
Both Miranda’s Mount and my next book are published by Piatkus Entice and repped by my agent.
How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
Miranda’s Mount took about 6 months to write – that’s fast for me and I had very few edits which was wonderful. It just flowed out of me.
What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
Gosh, I daren’t mention other authors as I am not worthy etc but I suppose it could be considered as a sexy version of a Katie Fforde or a very British Rachel Gibson or a modern version of a Lisa Kleypas.
Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
Michael Fassbender in his Hex guise for Jago. Kate Winslet for Miranda. Miranda Hart for Ronnie. Judy Dench for Lady Hilary
Who or What inspired you to write this book?
My passion for romantic adventure and love of Cornwall.
What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
I hope it has everything: passion, romance, sex, emotion, laughter, tears, action and adventure
I tag the following authors who may or may not have already done this!

Selina Says:
Lisa Kleypas has written some excellent modern fiction – ‘Smooth Talking Stranger’ is my favourite (I have it on audio book as well, but have to be careful where I listen to it!).
Stevie Carroll Says:
Ack! I’m so far behind on reading people’s blogs. I hadn’t seen until now that you’d tagged me, but I’ve done the meme twice: here and here for two different but related works in progress.
