This is what a romantic novelist looks like

May 24, 2011

Remember I went to a party last week? A party held by the Romantic Novelists Association? Well, so did a reporter from the Daily Mail.

Except …maybe she didn’t go to the same party. Because according to her piece in the Daily Mail this week, the party was full of ‘middle-aged and elderly women in their pearls and support tights’ making abit of money to boost ‘their pension pot’. I won’t bore you with the string of cliches and stereotypes in the rest of the article but you’d be forgiven for thinking the writer had already composed it before it she actually went to the event.

Funnily enough, the Mail article didn’t have any pictures of people at the party. Maybe because any photographic evidence would have shown the report as what it was – an unconvincing piece of fiction.

Any romance novelist, presented with the opportunity to get first hand experience of their subject, would have jumped at the chance – and used it to add depth, realism and truth to their writing.

If you really want to see romantic novelists, take a look at the pictures I took for this blog or visit the RNA website or follow the hashtag #thisiswhataromanticnovelistlookslike on Twitter.

The RNA is a wonderful group of women and men of all ages, from 20s to 80s, united by one thing only: we love to write. So put that in your pipe and smoke, it, Claudia.

Okay. Rant over. I’ve had a five ‘book’ review for Wish You Were Here from The Long and Short of It book reviews.

And if you were wondering, this is what this particular romantic novelist looks like:
