I don’t care if Monday’s blue…

September 28, 2009

I ought to be blue. I’ve got a sore throat that makes me sound like I’ve swallowed a scrubbing brush and also – my daughter has left home. Yes, she’s gone away to do a PhD which means she has effectively moved out (but in that case, why do we have 90% of her stuff here?)

But I’m not as blue as I could be because I’m so happy she has found something she really wants to do. Also, things could be worse. If you could have seen where she’d been initially accommodated…. it is definitely going in a book. The excuse was ‘well, it’s student accommodation.’ Sorry, I don’t buy that – not from an institution that prides itself on being world class. I’ve seen plenty of other accommodation at other universities and colleges and this was totally unacceptable and unsuitable. The room I had as an undergrad a squillion years ago, seems like a palace in comparison.

After a stressful weekend, all has been sorted but I’m still concerned for the other students that might have to put up with what will have been offered them.

So, off my soapbox. Miss Bennet has flown the nest and I’ll miss her terribly but I’m so happy she can now settle in and start her new life.

Pleased to hear the accommodation for your daughter has been sorted out.

I’ve just returned from taking J to uni, and although I expected his room to look less like something from stalag 13, he seemed happy with it. Mind you, that could be due to it being his first room away from home and the fact that I’ve left him in peace.

Debs. I think you’re right – it’s the novelty of having their own place but i think you’ll also love the way he comes home with a new perspective on his comfortable home!

Thing is, Ms bennet is 22 now and by then, they have different expectations. Mine told me she just wanted to be treated like an adult! I can’t argue with that. She has a lovely place now but it took some stress and wrangling.

Phillipa, My daughter did a post-grad degree in Forestry in Oxford and she had a room in Green College and her dad and I used to stay in a suite of rooms there when we went to visit her. Like you, I missed her when she left home but her room here is still as she left it and she comes regularly to stay for a week or longer. It is great to see them start out in life on their own although you miss them terribly. i might be able to make it to Heath Hayes on Monday. Good luck.
