Volcanic hopes… dashed.

April 16, 2010

Well, I was hoping to tell you how much I’m looking forward to Monday and I’m still looking forward to Monday …but that’s now with fingers and every other appendage firmly crossed.

The London Book Fair begins this weekend and the lovely people at my US publisher, Sourcebooks, have invited me to a celebratory dinner at The Reform Club in London. The club is famous for many reasons and you may of heard of it as the place where Phileas Fogg sets off and ends his journey in Jules Verne’s novel, Around the World in Eighty Days.

And you might also have seen the club in Die Another Day. James Bond and Toby Stephens have a vicious sword fight there, egged on by Madonna who’s playing a fencing mistress in a corset. So I have to see it.

I’m now hoping the Sourcebooks team can reach the UK despite the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland which is causing a total lockdown of flights in/out of the UK.

I’m so excited about meeting my publisher. I’ve got my train tickets, I’ve got my overnight stay organised – good grief, I’ve even bought a new Tula handbag specially for the occasion.

I know this is all trivial compared to the huge disruption it’s caused to thousands of people’s travel plans but it doesn’t stop me hoping.

Hopefully, I’ll be back next week to tell you how it went, and with photos, if we’re allowed to take them.

UPDATE: It’s all off and if I said I was being stoical about it, I’d be lying. 🙁 🙁

The Reform Club looks amazing, I do hope you manage to meet up with your publishers for lunch.

My son is worried about returning to Uni on Monday, but I’m sure it’ll be fine by then.

I feel really bad for the many people whose family trips and hols are being ruined.

awwww….Phillipa :(. So sorry your event has been canceled. Stupid natural disasters always get in the way of good clean fun.

The bonus is you still have the new Tula handbag. Consolation prize?
