Win a Miranda’s Mount goody bag & voucher

October 5, 2012

Gardens at St Michael’s Mount

Whew. Miranda’s Mount is well and truly launched – thank you to everyone who Tweeted about it, Facebooked it and bought it. I was genuinely bowled over by the tidal wave of goodwill. I celebrated by having lunch with Chris from The Book Trunk and then opened a bottle of fizz with Mr Bennet – and promptly fell asleep in front of the TV. Only Janet Street-Porter’s voice on Question Time, woke me up (if you’re from the UK, you’ll know what I mean.)

But the party isn’t over.

Over the weekend, I’m running a competition to win a Miranda’s Mount Goody Bag – which ‘contains’ an Amazon voucher for a copy of Miranda’s Mount, the winner’s choice of a signed copy of any of my print books plus other promotional bits and bobs and twiddly bits. It’s open worldwide – hurrah!

Miranda’s Mount is set on a fictional island castle in Cornwall – I was inspired to write it by a visit to the amazing St Michael’s Mount.

To enter the contest, all you have to do is tell me your favourite dream island – it can be one you’ve visited, long to visit or even a fictional island. Rugged, lush, dramatic or romantic, I don’t mind.

I’ll pick a winner on Thursday, look forward to hearing your islands. 🙂

Bermuda is the most magical island I’ve been to – I couldn’t believe that a real place could have water that clear or sand so white.

  2. Robin Kiziak Says:

    Hi Phillipa,

I’m going to be cheeky and choose two islands, both in the Caribbean.

The first island is St Lucia where my wife and I had our honeymoon. It’s a fantastic island in that it has the glorious beaches and turquoise sea as well as no end of greenery to go exploring in.

The second island is the Turks & Caicos which is somewhere I have never visited but would love to take my wife and son to for the holiday of a lifetime. It is an Island that is part of the commonwealth and still has the Queen as it’s head of state but I can’t think of anywhere else that would be so different to Great Britain. Look up pictures for the Turks & Caicos islands on the web and you will see what I mean!

Hope you’re well and enjoying the well earned acclaim for Miranda’s Mount.

    Take care.

    Robin

Diana – I would *love* to go to bermuda. One of our neighbours went and raved about how wonderful it was.

Robin – I’ve been to St Lucia for our 20th wedding anniversary – and it was incredibly lush. Loved the volcano and gardens. Thanks for your good wishes. x

  4. Chanpreet Says:

Favorite island? I haven’t visited any, but I have plenty on my list of places to visit. I’d love to visit that couldn’t be more different. Prince Edward Island is the setting for most of L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables Series. I know it won’t look the same as it did a little over a hundred years ago when she wrote, the first book, but I’d love to see it nonetheless!

Congratulations on the release of Miranda’s Mount Phillipa! I can’t wait to read it! 🙂

  5. Naomi Says:

I would have to say Pandora – (from Avatar the movie), as it simply is the stuff of dreams…

  6. Linda C Says:

I would love to visit some of the Scottish islands. So far I’ve only ticked Skye off the list but that was many years ago and also too brief a trip.

I think Orkney would be fascinating; nearer Norway than London, amazing scenery and wildlife, and possibly a chance to see the Aurora Borealis at the right time of year.

  7. Phillipa Says:

Hi Chanpreet is that in Canada? I’d love t go back there to the East coast. The west was incredible.

Naomi – I am ashamed to say I’ve never seen Avatar ! I like that they chose the name of the ship that’s connected with The Mutiny on the Bounty.

Linda – I’d love to visit Orkney and Shetland too, but the long sea crossing rather puts me off as I don’t travel well by boat! Saw some friends’ pics last summer and it looked so beautiful with a lot of ancient sites.

  8. DarcyO Says:

    Congrats on the new release!

I have always wanted to go to Hawaii so I’d pick the island of Kauai.

  9. Angela Simmon Says:

Congrats on the release of Miranda’s Mount! I simply cannot wait to read it.

I would love to visit the Isle of Arran. My great-grandparents were from there and I would love to visit their hometown!

    Cheers,
    Angela

  10. Elise Says:

My favorite island is Moorea in Tahiti. It is one of the most naturally beautiful islands I have ever seen, especially the view of Cook’s Bay. It has mild warm temperatures, absolutely clear blue warm waters where you can see colorful exotic fish swimming right around you, huts built standing right in the water, no highrise buildings to block any views, its got its own agriculture industry where they grow delicious native tropical fruits and veggies, scenic hills, and warm friendly people. It’s the stuff of dreams, an absolute paradise.

  11. Jodes Says:

Kirrin Island – I grew up on Famous Five, so what other Island could there possibly be for me???

  12. Chanpreet Says:

@Phillipa-Prince Edward Island is in Canada. I’ve been to Vancouver, on the west coast, but never to the east coast, and that’s close to me distance wise. I agree with you about it being a beautiful country. 🙂

  13. Leslieg Says:

I’ve finished Miranda’s Mount and loved it!!!

Having spent lots of years living on or near various islands, I’d say my favourite to go back to would be Cuba. The beaches are gorgeous, the people are wonderful, and, for the Americas, there’s quite a bit of history.

To comment on PEI, I went out with an Islander for many years and spent a lot of time over there, because it’s close to one of the places I lived for a relatively long time, and the “Land of Anne” is wonderful and compact in an almost British sense. Great for a week’s holiday in summer!

  14. Melissa Says:

    Congratulations on the launch Phillipa!

There are so many islands I would love to visit! The Whitsunday Islands off the Queensland (Australia) coast have been somewhere I would love to visit for a long time.

While I’m living in Scotland I would love the opportunity to visit some of the islands off the coast of Scotland too!

PEI has also been on the list ever since I first read the Anne books!

  15. Clare Says:

It has to be Venice. It has magnificent buildings, surrounded by water & is one of the most romantic places I’ve ever visited.

  16. Stevie Carroll Says:

I’ll have to say Jersey. I spent a lot of holidays in the Channel Islands when young.

  17. agenoria Says:

I’ve read, and enjoyed, Miranda’s Mount, too.

Some years ago, we spent a few days on Skye. The Western Isles are a beautiful – and sometimes stormy! – place to visit. But there are two other islands that I think of as favourites.

When I was a child we spent several holidays in north Devon and I started looking for Lundy on the horizon. We did manage to visit it a couple of times. I like puffins and “Lundy” may mean puffin.

On the other side of the world, Rangitoto, north of Auckland in the Hauraki Gulf. It’s volcanic and as it is about 600 years old, it still has lava fields. It’s over ten years since I climbed to the top on a hot April day. And we walked through a lava tube. It’s in the background in a lot of pictures of Auckland.

  18. Phillipa Says:

Can’t keep up with all the fantastic entries. Thank you!

  19. CamillaVirgil Says:

    This is so hard!
But if I have to choose just one, it would have to be Flotta, Orkney.

I spent two summers growing up on this little island in the Orkneys as a child as the minister’s daughter. I loved biking around the island, swimming in the old granite quarry and the North Sea, exploring the war ruins, admiring the puffins, and fishing.

I’d love to go back to see all my old friends and to revisit all the historical sights, not only on Flotta, but on Hoy and the Mainland (I wouldn’t mind seeing more of Orkney either). I’m afraid the historical sights were rather lost on me and my siblings and “Not another Neolithic ruin!!!” was a common groan back in the day. When we left the last time, I refused to go up on deck to watch Stromness disappear on the horizon, as doing that felt like I would really be saying goodbye for forever.
